Lenton
Brae Estate
Lenton
Brae Estate is a small winery owned
and operated by the Tomlinson Family.
Bruce, until recently, managed the
vineyard while Jeanette manages the
administration and sales and can usually
be found at the cellar door. Edward their
youngest son is the winemaker.
Lenton
Brae Estate is situated in the
Willyabrup Valley of the Margaret River
wine region in the south west of Western
Australia.Lenton Brae's winery is an
architectural icon of the Margaret River
wine region. It was designed by Bruce
Tomlinson in 1989. Prior to developing
Lenton Brae, Bruce was an architect and
town planning consultant.
The winery
is constructed with rammed earth, a
typical building material of the district
comprising solid gravel and cement walls
350 mm wide. This results in an
impressive, solid, fortress-like
construction which is cool in summer and
warm in winter.
As well as
tasting our wines, visitors to the cellar
door can enjoy our magnificent lead light
window. Entitled 'Sunlight Through Canopy'
by Perth artist Heather Jones, this window
beautifully captures the effect of the
sun's rays as they filter through the
vines.
The
building also incorporates a viewing
platfrom from which both a panoramic view
of the Willyabrup Valley and the winery
operations can be safely
observed.
In 1998
the Busselton Shire Council heritage
listed the building for its architectural
significance.
Lenton
Brae Estate is is situated on Caves
Road, Willyabrup, in the heart of the
Margaret River wine region. The textbook
soils comprise a gravely loam overlaying a
clay base.
The
gravely loam provides natural drainage
through the root zone while the clay base
improves water retention which in turn
encourages deep root penetration. All 10
hectares have access to drip irrigation
which is used judiciously towards the end
of the growing season. This keeps the
vines healthy, and actively producing
sugar and flavour compounds right up until
harvest.
