Peel
Estate
Peel
Estate is one of Western Australia's
most prestigious premium wineries and the
first in the now growing Peel Wine Region.
Established
in 1973 by Will Nairn who continues to
delight wine connoisseurs with his
remarkable range of red and white wines
produced on coastal limestone country in
Baldivis which is about 70km South of
Perth, Western Australia.
The winery
was built and first wines made at Peel
Estate in 1980 (previous vintages had been
made at Paul Conti Wines). Cellar door
sales started in 1981 - we have just
completed our 29th vintage in 2007. The
limestone, temperature and closeness to
the Indian Ocean (3 kilometres) gives Peel
Estate a very Mediterranean microclimate
with mild Winters and relatively cool
Summers.
With
beautiful picnic grounds shaded by
majestic Tuart gums, Peel Estate is only
45 minutes from Perth City Centre. Free
electric barbeques are available for
customers and picnic baskets and platters
are available by order.
In 1973
the first Shiraz vines were planted,
followed by Chenin Blanc and Zinfandel in
1976, and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1979.
Other varieties such as Chardonnay,
Verdelho, Cabernet Franc and Merlot were
planted in 1980.
Additional
Shiraz were planted in 1994 and in 2002 we
added an extra hectare of Zinfandel,
making the total area of land under vine
16 hectares.
The Peel
region, with it's closeness to the ocean,
limestone soils and Mediterranean climate,
is an ideal location for bringing out
fruit intensity and adds great regional
characteristics to the wine.
All wine
at Peel Estate is made on site in a
colonial style, architect designed winery
set in a magnificent Tuart tree dominated
environment. The winery has been built
into the hill to maximize natural
insulation.
Visitors
can observe the daily activities of the
winery from the mezzanine tasting area and
enjoy the tranquillity of the spacious
lawned area which includes an electric BBQ
- a great venue for a family picnic.
Peel
wines are widely available from liquor
outlets and restaurants throughout
Australia and current exports are Ireland,
England, Japan and USA.
The Cellar
door opened to the public in 1981 and
boasts a charming, rustic mezzanine level
which overlooks the winery.
A visit on
the right day during vintage will show
wines being crushed, pressed and/or red
wines fermenting on their skins. And
because it is all open plan you will also
experience all the lovely scents
associated with vintage.
Wine
tasting is free (although large bus groups
do incur a fee which is refundable upon
purchase) and most of the range is tasted
on a daily basis. Wines such as sparkling
shiraz and Zinfandel are only available
for tastings on week ends.
Picnic
baskets and platters can be ordered a day
in advance of your visit on a weekday and
by Friday 12pm for a weekend picnic. If
you're just looking for a snack while
sharing a bottle in our picnic grounds
then we also offer a tasting pack which is
available every day.
